Fake News and Real Heat: How Misinformation is Destroying Our Future

By An Anonymous 10th Grader | Published on June 28, 2026 | Category: Politics & Media

We are the generation that grew up with the internet in our pockets. From the time we were little kids, we’ve had access to more information than anyone else in history. You’d think that would make us the smartest generation, right? We can fact-check anything in five seconds. But instead, something weird has happened. It feels like nobody agrees on what the truth is anymore. And when it comes to the biggest threats facing our world—like global warming and global politics—the spread of fake news is literally deadly.

Part 1: The Weaponization of Information

When I scroll through social media, I see a completely different version of reality depending on whose video I watch. One person will show scientific charts proving that carbon emissions are cooking the planet. The very next video will feature some talking head claiming that global warming is a hoax invented to steal our tax money. How did we get here?

Echo Chambers and Algorithms

The problem isn't just that people are lying; it's the algorithms. Apps are designed to show you what keeps you clicking. If you click on a conspiracy theory video, the algorithm thinks, "Great, let's show them ten more!" Before you know it, you are trapped in an echo chamber where everyone agrees with the fake news, and any actual scientific fact is treated like a lie. In the context of global warming, this is a massive political threat. Because if half the population doesn't even believe the Earth is heating up, how can we ever convince politicians to spend billions of dollars fixing it?

"We aren't just fighting a war against carbon emissions; we are fighting a war against lies."

Part 2: Why Do Politicians Lie About Climate Change?

As a 10th grader studying history, one thing is clear: politicians rarely lie just for the fun of it. They do it for power and money. Denying global warming is an incredibly profitable business model for a select few.

The Fossil Fuel Lobby

Some of the richest companies in the world are oil and coal corporations. Transitioning to green energy (like solar and wind) threatens their trillions of dollars in profits. So, what do they do? They spend millions of dollars funding fake studies, paying off specific political figures, and running ads that confuse the public. They don’t necessarily have to prove that climate change is fake; they just have to plant enough doubt so that regular people hesitate. And that hesitation buys them another decade of profits while the planet burns.

Short-Term Politics

Politicians operate on a two, four, or six-year election cycle. Fixing climate change requires policies that might be unpopular right now—like higher taxes on carbon or changing how we manufacture things—but will save us in 20 or 30 years. But a politician who wants to win an election next year isn’t going to run on a platform of "Things will be hard now, but good in 2050." It’s much easier for them to yell "Fake News," blame another country, and ignore the problem. The political system is literally designed to fail when dealing with long-term threats.

Part 3: The Danger of Apathy

The scariest outcome of all this fake news isn't that everyone becomes a climate denier. The scariest outcome is that people just give up. I see it in my friends at school. When you are constantly bombarded with conflicting information, it's exhausting. It’s easier to just scroll past the news, ignore the melting ice caps, and watch a funny video instead.

This apathy is exactly what the people profiting off the destruction of the planet want. If we don't care, we don't protest. If we don't protest, they don't have to change. Fake news is used as a tool to exhaust the public into submission.

Conclusion: Becoming Truth Seekers

So, how does my generation survive this? We have to become viciously protective of the truth. We can’t just mindlessly retweet or share a video without checking where it came from. We have to learn how to read scientific consensus, not just political opinion pieces.

Global warming is real. The ice is melting, the storms are getting worse, and the science is undeniable. The politicians who say otherwise are either misinformed or lying to protect their wallets. As 10th graders, we might not be able to vote yet, but we can call out the lies when we see them. If we can clean up our information ecosystem, we might actually have a fighting chance at cleaning up the planet.
